Half-Life 2 Walkthrough - Chapter 8: Sandtraps - Antlions: Friends and Foes

You'll be doing a whole lot with antlions for the time being. This section of the Half-Life 2 walkthrough will detail your battle with your first antlion guard and the acquisition of the pheropods that ally the antlions with you so you can lead the charge on Nova Prospekt.

    Antlion Guard Battle

    Drop down into the recessed sandy area and start walking forward. A very big antlion will spawn. Rush past it until you get to the end of the little area. There is a rebel machine gunner here who can help you kill the guard. Then just pull out the shotgun and start unloading double-barreled bursts into the guard. You can also use the gravity gun to throw explosive barrels at it. The magnum and the crossbow are also effective. Just keep moving out of its way and you'll be fine. The rock in the center of the spot by the gate makes for a good separation point. Once it's dead, a vortigaunt will congratulate you and give you the pherpods.

    Pheropod Training

    You now have the pheropods. Follow the vortigaunt through the camp and grab supplies as you go. Once you reach the top, you will just have to do a few quick training exercises. Just throw a pod in the pit when asked, then hit the dummy with one, then summon them back to you. Go out the opened gate when you're done.

    Antlion Army

    Time to charge Nova Prospekt. Run up to the first thumper. Climb the ladder and turn off the thumper so that your new allies can advance. Turn off the second one ahead and kill any combine that approach. Throw a pheropod up to the bunker on the hill. Your antlions will be able to kill the gunner and overrun the position shortly. Advance to the next position by the rocks. Throw another pheropod on the bunker ahead to clear it out. Disable the third thumper to let your antlions advance further.

    The area ahead is covered by a bunker with three machine guns. Be ready to run and hide. Throw a pheropod out and let your antlions draw some fire away from you. Go behind the rocks and kill the three soldiers in your way. Walk along the low side by the water to avoid the gunfire, then turn up the hill that's next to the bunker. Kill the four soldiers that are in your way and then use the shotgun to clear out the three gunners in the bunker. Gather your antlions and look for the damaged grate to the by the bunker. Go inside the ruins.

    The Ruins

    Some Combine will throw flares and deploy man hacks in a minute. You will face about ten soldiers spread throughout the building and two man hacks. Your antlions will probably handle the brunt of the assault. They are quite effective in tight quarters, so just hang back and pick off soldiers with your AR2. Go through the ruins and exit the hole in the wall. You will come out by two machine gunners, but they are facing away. Kill any soldiers that might be inside, then look forward. The gunner on the cliff is probably firing out you. Snipe him with the magnum or the crossbow. Then just advance to his position ahead. There are about four soldiers ahead of you, but your antlions have probably already killed them.
