Classic Diablo Game Guide: Magical Shrines and Their Effects On Player Characters in Diablo

Overview of Magic Shrines in Classic Diablo

Shrines in Diablo are areas where magic has concentrated into a single spot and via shrines this magic can grant you great favour. However, just as easily, shrines can also grant ill-fortune.

Shrines are activated by having your character walk close to one and clicking on the shrine once highlighted by your cursor. The effects granted by shrines depends on its type, and while it’s magic takes effect immediately, it’s effects may not be noticeable right away. Sometimes a shrine’s effect will be beneficial, other times not. So how you do know which ones to avoid?

Shrines in Diablo are titled with an adjective, but unless you have a good memory you’re likely to forget the effects of each shrine. When each shrine is activated it also gives off a cryptic message which is a clue to the shrine’s effect but for these shrines their effect is the same throughout the game.

Special shrines also exist, such as the Blood Fountain and the Goat Shrine. Special shrines have temporary effects, such as healing or mana replenishment, but some also have random effects so a hint of caution is always advised when faced with special shrines.

Types Of Shrine

When you hover over a shrine, its name will be given as an adjective, such as ‘creepy’ or ‘spritual’ and when activated will give a clue to its effect. The full list of shrines is below:

Abandoned Shrine

Gives the clue "The hands of men may be guided by fate" and gives a temporary +2 Dexterity increase.

Creepy Shrine

Gives the clue "Strength is bolstered by heavenly faith" and gives a temporary +2 Strength increase

Cryptic Shrine

Gives the clue "Arcane power brings destruction" with the effect of castings a Nova spell and also restores mana.

Divine Shrine

Gives the clue "Drink and be refreshed" with the effect it restores health and mana. Also, on dungeon levels 1-3, it gives one Potion of Full Mana and one Potion of Full Life. On other levels, it gives two Potions of Full Rejuvenation.

An Enchanted shrine can never be found in the Caves or Hell levels of the game, or as an effect of Goat Shrines or Cauldrons.

Special Magic Shrines in Diablo

In addition to the above ‘true’ shrines, there are also some special shrines which you may come across during the course of playing Diablo. These are:

Blood Fountain

The Blood Fountain restores 1 life each time it is used; there is no limit to the amount of times the shrine may be visited, up to the character’s maximum life has been reached.

Cauldron

The Cauldron Shrine bestows a random effect from one of the main shrines in the game.

Fountain of Tears

The Fountain of Tears gives the character +1 to one randomly selected attribute, while -1 to another attribute, also randomly selected but not the same as the increased attribute.

Goat Shrine

Like the Cauldron Shrine, the Goat Shrine gives a random effect from one of the main shrines in the game.

Murky Pool

The Murky Pool casts an Infravision spell on the character, helping them to spot hidden enemies easier.

Purifying Spring

The Purifying Spring works in a similar way to the Blood Fountain by restores 1 mana each time it is used; like the Blood Fountain there is no limit to the amount of times it can be used, up to the character’s maximum mana score.

While Cauldron and Goat Shrines’ effects are randomly allocated from the among the main shrines in Diablo, Thaumaturgic shrines never appear in them.
