Blackfathom Deeps Map and General Information

Blackfathom Deeps is also known as BFD or ’the ‘Deeps’ and is located on the far western corner of Ashenvale, on the continent of Kalimdor. BFD has a healthy amount of quests for both Alliance and Horde characters, along with class quests for paladins and warlocks. Players are only offered quests pertaining to the ‘Deeps once they hit level 18. At that point you can grab a few friends and head into the instance, but bring a group no larger than five. The instance will allow up to 10 players to enter but quests will only be marked as complete if the group is five players or less. BFD also has a very diverse list of blue drops which every class of player can take advantage of.

Alliance Quests

Researching the Corruption

Gershala Nightwisper in Auberdine wants eight corrupt brain stems, and that is the goal of the quest Researching the Corruption.

This quest is completed by defeating and looting any of the mobs located in The Zoram Strand, the area surrounding the door to Blackfathom Deeps. Once a player has obtained all eight brain stems, they must be returned to Gershala in Auberdine. This quest grants some great rep with Darnassus and the choice of either a green cape or green mail bracers.

Knowledge in the Deeps

Ghamoo-ra

Obtained from Gerrig Bonegrip in the Forlorn Cavern in Ironforge, Knowledge of the Deeps is one of the first quests players can complete upon entering Blackfathom Deeps. Gerriq requests that players travel to BFD and search for the Lorgalis manuscript. The manuscript is located in the instance’s second room, the Pool of Ask’ar. This is the same room where players will find the dungeon’s first boss, Ghamoo-ra, a giant turtle. The manuscript can be found in a crate underwater in the small pool at the northern tip of the room. The manuscript must then be returned to Gerriq in Ironforge to complete the quest. The reward is a level 25 ring that gives plus one to stamina and plus four to spirit, along with a little bit of rep with Ironforge.

WoW Blackfathom Deeps

In Search of Thaelrid and Blackfathom Villainy

The quest-giver for In Search of Thaelrid is Dawnwatcher Shaedlass, who is located near the Craftsman’s Terrace in Darnassus. The

Argent Guard Thaelrid

quest’s goal is pretty simple, the player must find Argent Guard Thaelrid. Like the manuscript from Knowledge of the Deeps, he is located along the wall in the room with Ghamoo-ra. To find him, players will have to swim through an underwater cavern to get into another room. Argent Guard Thaelrid can be found lying on the ground, injured. He will provide players with the quest Blackfathom Villainy, which requests that Aku’mai, a three-headed hydra who is the final boss in WoW Blackfathom Deeps, be slain. This quest ends with Dawnwatcher Selgorm in Darnassus. Players get to choose between two rewards, either a blue wand or blue shield. This quest also garners really good rep with Darnassus and the Argent Dawn.

Twilight Falls

Twilight Falls is another quest given by the Argent Dawn, in this case Argent Guard Manados. He is located in Darnassus near Dawnwatcher Shaedlass, the quest-giver for In Search of Thaelrid. Manados requests that a player bring him 10 twilight pendants. The pendants are obtained as drops from any of the twilight named mobs in the Blackfathom Deeps. Once a player has gathered all 10 pendants, they must return to Argent Guard Manados. Players can chose between a pair of green cloth boots or a green leather belt for their reward. Even if the item rewards are of no use to the player, the hefty amount of rep that is obtained with Darnassus and the Argent Dawn makes this quest very much worth doing.

Horde Quests

The Essence of Aku’Mai

The first, and the easiest BFD quest for the Horde, The Essence of Aku’Mai, asks players to gather 20 large sapphire clusters and

Je’neu Sancrea

return them to the quest-giver, Je’neu Sancrea in Ashenvale. The large sapphire clusters are blue crystals that are attached to the walls all around the door to the instance and near the entrance inside the instance. Please note that players do not have to enter the dungeon at all to complete this quest. The sapphires respawn rather quickly and can be gathered up outside the instance door with very little effort. The only real reward for this quest is XP, but players will gain some decent rep with the Darkspear Trolls and a minimal amount of rep with Thunder Bluff.

Allegiance to the Old Gods Parts One and Two

To obtain this quest, players will already have to have entered the ‘Deeps. Players can take this quest from a damp note, which is dropped from Blackfathom Tide Priestess’. The note will have players go to Je’neu Sancrea, and in turn Je’neu will ask the players to kill Lorgus Jett. Lorgus can be found roaming around within the ‘Deeps. He is normally found in the caverns just after the large room with Ghamoo-ra. Once Lorgus Jett has been taken care of, players return to Je’neu to claim their reward. In this case players can choose between a green ring geared towards warriors, or some green cloth shoulders.

Blackfathom Deeps WoW

Amongst the Ruins and Baron Aquanis

Amongst the Ruins is another quest given by Je’neu Sancrea. This time Je’neu is asking players to retrieve the fathom core, which can be found in the water under the large concrete circle in the room, just after the hallways where Lorgus Jett can be found. Once the fathom core has been picked up, Baron Aquanis will appear and must be defeated. When the Baron has been vanquished he will drop a strange water globe which will offer another quest. This is simply to bring the globe to Je’neu Sancrea. Completing this Blackfathom Deeps WoW quest will have players choose between a blue one-handed sword and a blue wand.

Blackfathom Villainy

Like the Alliance version of this quest, it starts with meeting the injured Argent Guard Thaelrid in the ‘Deeps. He is located in a small

Twilight Lord Kelris

area just off the room where the giant turtle Ghamoo-ra can be found. To get to Thaelrid from the large turtle room, players must swim through an underwater hole that opens up to a camp where the injured guard can be found. Thaelrid asks Horde players to kill Twilight Lord Kelris and bring his head to Bashana Runetotem in Thunder Bluff. The rewards for this quest are some of the best quest rewards offered for BFD quests. Players must choose between a blue wand and a blue shield.

Class Quests

The Orb of Soran’ruk

This warlock class quest, for both Horde and Alliance, has players running into the Blackfathom Deeps and Shadowfang Keep . It starts and ends with Doan Karhan, a human warlock found in the Barrens. Warlocks must find a specific item in each dungeon and return it to Karhan. In BFD, players are after Soran’ruk Fragment. It is dropped by the twilight acolytes.

Seeking the Kor Gem and The Path of the Adept

Like the Warlock quest, paladins of both the Horde and the Alliance must enter the ‘Deeps for a specific item. Although paladins of

both factions are after the same item, the quests that bring them to BFD are different. For the Alliance, the quest is called The Path of the Adept. This quest has Alliance paladins heading into BFD, the Deadmines and Shadowfang Keep, each for a different item. Horde paladins are doing a quest called Seeking the Kor Gem. Regardless of which quest a player is doing, they are both after the Kor Gem. The Kor Gem drops from any of the mobs outside the instance door, the drop rate is also pretty high so this should be a cakewalk for any experienced player.

Blackfathom Deeps is a quick instance to run with a well oiled group and has a lot to offer in quests and drops. It’s also a great instance to prepare Alliance players to enter the labyrinth that is Gnomeregan.
