Making Map Guide

The Call of Duty: World at War PC game is also known simply as Call of Duty 5 and currently has a total of thirteen multiplayer maps of varying sizes in which you can go head to head against opponents online. This guide will describe each map in detail, plus give you some pointers as to where the best defensive locations and strike points can be found. This is by no means a definitive guide, and I encourage you to find your own favorite spots within the map.

The Makin map is a popular multiplayer map that offers mostly close quarters combat and almost too many hiding places. The premise of this map is that you are fighting in a Japanese fishing village where you can go up into the huts, or hide under them. This is a medium sized map and there are no vehicles.

I have played this map dozens of times online, and I’m still not sure if I really like it. The problem is that it’s got too much stuff in the way, and you can’t move around very much without getting shot. Even on a server with a dozen or so players, the action still tends to bottleneck in two main areas and both sides end up fighting it out in the same locations over and over. It’s a tough map to dominate.

My problem with this map is basically that there is a giant round hut right in the middle of it. This hut provides too much cover for players that want to snipe out the windows, and the various walls and dividers springing off of it make for too many impassible areas. All along the bottom of the map is waterfront, and it is kind of neat to catch guys wading through the water, but it gets old quick. Unfortunately, this game won’t let you swim.

In the top of the map, there is a path that goes around, but this is a major kill zone since it is surrounded by underbrush where people hide and wait for enemy troops. It’s nearly impossible to see someone hiding in the bushes until it is too late. I think this map is unfairly balanced because those who control the left side of the map almost always tend to do better than the people on the right side. The left side offers more structures and more cover, while the right side is a little too open and forces players into a few dangerous pathways.

The Makin map has its pros and cons, but I usually try to avoid it unless there are a lot of people online and then I don’t have to worry about surviving very long, anyway. At least most of the map is out in the open, so your artillery strikes will be quite effective.
