The veil of secrecy has finally been lifted, and the World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Closed Beta has finally begun. For the first time, members of the general playing public (who remembered to opt-in for betas) will be allowed to see the new Azeroth, devastated and completely remade as a result of a massive cataclysm.
Players who are invited into the beta will get the first chance to play as game’s two new races, Goblins and Worgen, and will be given the opportunity to copy their existing characters to the test server and level them up to the new cap of 85, experiencing all the new zones and raids that Cataclysm will offer along the way.
WoW players around the world are salivating at the opportunity to get a sneak peek at Cataclysm, and our guide to beta opt-ins will help you ensure you’ve done everything possible to set yourself up for an invite to the beta.
Before you can be selected to participate in the Cataclysm beta, you’ll first need to let Blizzard know that you are willing to help out. The beta is more than a chance to see everything in Cataclysm before it’s released, it’s also a chance for Blizzard to get valuable feedback from players to ensure that the expansion is a good as it can possibly be.
Players should consider this before deciding to opt-in. The participation of players in beta in the bug-squashing process ensures a more refined product for us all on launch day.
So, if you’re ready to step up and help out, then head over to your account management page on Battle.net and log in.
Beta Opt-In at Battle.net
Once you’re logged in, check out the “Account Management” section on the home page. You’ll find it just below the “My Profile” section. Second from the right is an option that reads “Beta Profile Settings.” Click on it to continue.
To register for beta testing, you’ll need to download a small program that will gather all of your system’s specs for the development team. The link to download is at the bottom of the page on the left, and you’ll have to choose between the Windows and Mac version, depending on your setup.
Download and run the program, agree to the terms and conditions, and it will quickly scan your system. Click the “send” button when it appears to upload your info to your Battle.net account. After the upload, press the “close” button to end the program.
You should see your specs displayed on the left side of the screen. Check the box (or boxes) on the right side next to the products you’d like to be invited to test (Warcraft Universe, specifically, for the Cataclysm beta), then press “Update Preferences” to complete the process.
You’re now all registered for the Cataclysm beta. Nothing left to do but wait.
