Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 “Stimulus Package” Map Pack

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is one of the most popular, if not the most popular, games in the world right now. Players began attacking the game with renewed vigor in late March, as Activision released the first map pack for the game, the so-called “Stimulus Package.”

The “Stimulus Package” contains a total of five maps, and will set you back approximately $15. Three of the maps, “Bailout,” “Storm,” and “Salvage,” are entirely new creations. The other two, “Crash” and “Overgrown,” are old favorites from the original Modern Warfare, retooled and optimized for Modern Warfare 2.

The map pack was originally only available on the Xbox 360, but the PC and PS3 versions became available on May 4th in North America and May 5th in Australia and Europe.

New Maps

Each of the new maps has its own unique style. From a dilapidated apartment complex to a snowy Russian hell, the level of diversity among these three maps is actually quite impressive.

“Bailout” is situated in the middle of an American city during the single-player game’s Russian Invasion. This multi-level apartment complex has seen better days, as fighting in the area has left walls riddled with bullet holes and buildings on fire. Russian supply drops fill the area. An empty swimming pool and destroyed recreation room illustrate the complex’s former decadence.

“Storm” takes place in a rainy industrial area, dotted throughout with abandoned heavy machinery. Catwalks and fire escapes provide many angles and opportunities for ambushes in this medium-sized map.

“Salvage” is a snowy, cold-weather map that seems to be situated somewhere in the Russian mountains. A large crane hangs overhead and major setpieces include a tanker truck, a pile of crushed cars, and stacks of shipping containers throughout. Clever players may even find themselves well concealed within the map’s doghouse.

Maps From the Original Modern Warfare

Alongside the three new maps created exclusively for Modern Warfare 2, the game’s designers also revamped and optimized two old favorites from the original Modern Warfare to include in the “Stimulus Package.”

The first, “Crash,” was the COD4 map clearly inspired by the movie “Black Hawk Down.” A crashed helicopter marks the center of this area, and players are free to hide and shoot one another from inside the various buildings and from the large number of accessible rooftops. “Crash” is a welcome addition to the lineup, as it was a favorite among the original game’s fans.

“Overgrown” is the second map to make the transition from the first game to the sequel. This sprawling, grass-covered map is great for snipers, features multiple hiding spots, and was a perfect map for modes like “Headquarters” and “Domination” in the original game.

Playstation 3 and PC gamers can finally get in on the “Stimulus Package” fun now that the maps are available for all systems. While Xbox 360 veterans may have gotten an early chance to learn the ins and outs of the new maps, their launch was plagued with difficulties. Here’s hoping the PS3 and PC launches are glitch free.
