Sex Content in The Witcher Games – Controversial or is Nudity Just a Part of Video Games?

Nudity and sex content in video games has been increasing. The controversy with games such as “The Witcher “ and the sequel “The Witcher 2" has been met with much scorn by conservative types of people. Adult gamers enjoy it though, so is it here to stay?

    Sex Content in Video Games

Video games have a long history of showing female characters in tight and skimpy outfits. Mild sexual content in the video games has also become commonplace. Most of the content is implied and gamers don’t actually see the characters having sexual interactions though.

Take for instance, in “The Sims 3" sex with The Sims 3 WooHoo romantic interaction. All that is shown is the couple moving around under the covers and then hearts falling on the bed. Most of the games keep it out of the M or the X-rated category.

Not all games are so clean though. The Witcher 2 sex content and the nudity in The Witcher 2 may be the most visually graphic sex scenes in the video game industry that has been released so far.

The original Witcher game and the sequel have been met with controversy over this issue. Does it really matter though? Is nudity and sex in video games here to stay?

The Witcher Games and Sex and Nudity

“The Witcher" and “The Witcher 2" games do contain nudity and sexual content. Perhaps nothing more than you would see watching a series on HBO though. Yet the controversy surrounding these games is enough to make a gamer want to throw their PC at overzealous people preaching that video game sex and nudity is evil.

The original game didn’t even have that much sex or nudity in it to even cause such a stir. Sure, there were sex cards that the main character Geralt collected. Some of the cut scenes showed some sexual content, but nothing hardcore (not even a little). Still, the developers created a different version of the game to sell to North American gamers because of the issue. In this censored version, the nudity and sex was lessened and censored in most areas and some of the dialog was changed to be less sexual or violent.

    The Witcher - Sex Cards

“The Witcher" sex cards or romance cards are something that is a part of the original title’s game. These cards are like trophies that the main character Geralt collects after his romantic rendezvous with the ladies in the cards.

    The Witcher sex card changes

The cards in the European versions of the game show the women pictured nude or partially nude. The more conservative North Americans that purchased the game didn’t see the cards as they were originally designed. Instead of seeing a nude woman on a card, the women on the cards were redesigned to have clothing cover where they were originally nude.

Many gamers in North America that played the game wanted the original cards instead. So, the developers of the game released the “Director’s Cut" patch to show the uncensored sex cards. This allowed players to see these nude cards without having to download mods which were also available for gamers to use with their game to show these cards.

    Nudity in The Witcher 2

Much to the delight of fans of the original, “The Witcher 2" has more nudity and sex scenes than the first game. Of course this also brought with it the same (or more) controversy than the original game.

The Witcher 2 Playboy Triss Cover

A large majority of the women in the game are all in tight and revealing clothing. This isn’t anything new with video games. The large amount of nude women featured in this game might be though. The cut scenes in the game show many women throughout the game fully nude and/or partially nude. It isn’t done distastefully, but it also isn’t for those under the age to watch either.

One of the most popular female characters in the game is Triss Merigold. She is so popular that she was even featured on the May cover of the Polish “Playboy" magazine. The Triss marigold Playboy spread is very sexy and sure to delight the hearts of male gamers everywhere.

The Witcher 2 Sex Content – Adults Only!

The Witcher 2 sex content   The cut scenes like the rest of the game are very beautiful visually and are like watching little mini movies. When it comes to the actual sex scenes in the game, they are just for adults. They are graphic and definitely not intended for anyone who is a minor.

If the sex content in the game doesn’t bother you, it could also be a welcome change to actually seeing some of the action instead of just using your own imagination to what was implied with the story. It may not be for everyone, but nobody is forcing anyone to play the game either.

Nudity and Sex Scenes – Controversial or Just a Part of Gaming?

The rating for the original “The Witcher" game and the sequel is “M" which means it is for mature gamers aged 17+. Kids can’t just go up to the cash register and purchase it without an ID any more than they could get into an R rated movie.

The Witcher 2 sex content may be what some would classify as softcore porn. The nudity in The Witcher 2 is of high quality and it has also been done in a tasteful way (most of the time). It isn’t hardcore porn that gamers would only play the game to watch. For that they could just turn on HBO and watch something like “True Blood" or turn on Skinimax late at night.

Personally, I think that nudity and sex content in video games is here to stay. “The Witcher" led the path to breaking the rules for it and aside from the controversy that surrounded it, adult gamers enjoy it. As a female gamer, I don’t mind it and if the storyline and gameplay is good, it wouldn’t bother me the slightest to play a game that has sex content like “The Witcher 2" does.

So, what do you think about nudity in video games such as with the sex scenes in “The Witcher 2"? Do you think that this type of action in video games is here to stay? Will it show more in future games? How do you feel about it?
