Starcraft 2 Ultralisk Strategy, Tips and Tricks
Strong Against:
Vulnerable To:
Zerg vs Zerg
Ultralisks are the preeminent ground unit in the Zerg locker. They are also particularly effective when turned upon opposition from their own race. They can savage swarms of Zerglings, and their invulnerability to the Infestor’s Mind Control abilities make them vital in the late stages of a Zerg vs Zerg match. Their one weak point is their lack of defense against aerial attack from the likes of Brood Lords and Mutalisks, but this can be countered by giving them mobile anti-air support from Hydralisks.
Zerg vs Terran
Wade into concentrated groupings of Marines and toss them around for fun, and Ultralisks will terrorize any Terran unit up close. Research the Chitinous Plating Upgrade early to provide some defense against ranged attacks from Marauders and Siege Tanks, counter attack by Battlecruisers with Hydralisk support, but beware the one-shot kill of the Thor Strike Cannon.
Zerg vs Protoss
The Ultralisk’s ability to break Force Fields defeats the classic Sentry dividing tactic, so assign an Ultralisk to provide support for Zergling swarms when attacking Zealot formations or Protoss Base Buildings. Ground troops in tight terrain are also easy prey. All the Protoss aerial units are highly effective against this unit, so especially beware Void Rays and Carriers.
Conclusion
The Starcraft 2 Ultralisk is a truly destructive unit when unleashed upon an enemy’s ground forces, trampling and smashing them into submission. Just make sure to cover its aerial achilles heel with a decent ring of anti-air fire from your Hydralisk units, and then stand back and admire as the Zerg Ultralisk stampedes its way across the SC2 online battlefield.
