Starcraft 2 Mutalisk Strategy, Tips and Tricks

Zerg vs Zerg

To make the most of Mutalisks against Zerg opposition, a fair bit of micro-managing can be involved. You want to harness the Mutalisk’s ability to target several enemy ground units, like Zergling squads, at once with the Glaive Wurm, bouncing it from unit to unit, while using this unit’s agility and speed to rapidly get it out of trouble. If your opponent deploys a Brood Lord, swarm it with massed Mutalisks at the first opportunity. Beware grouped Hydralisks, especially with the Grooved Spines upgrade.

Zerg vs Terran

Mutalisks are excellent at dealing with Viking fighters thanks to their speed and maneuverability in the air, but fair less well against Terran ranged units such as the Thor, not least because its splash damage effect can drop a whole swarm of Mutalisks in one go. Watch out for being sniped out of the sky by the Ghost as well.

Zerg vs Protoss

Mutalisks are traditionally strong against Protoss ground units, especially when massed into large squadrons, and can devastate Zealot squads in rapid fashion with the Glaive Wurm. Research Flyer Carapace at the earliest opportunity though, and steer clear of base defenses, as Photon Cannons can take Mutalisks out with ease. The Protoss Phoenix is probably the hardest counter to the Mutalisk in the whole game, as its ability to move while firing enables them to run rings around the Zerg unit in the air.

Conclusion

The Starcraft 2 Mutalisk is a vital component of any Zerg build order in SC2 multiplayer, and the sooner you can deploy them against your enemy’s weak ground units, the more havoc they can cause. Ensure you produce them in numbers, though, and expect casualties in the later stages of an online game, especially against a Protoss opponent.
