Continuing our comprehensive guide to the Protoss in Starcraft 2, Bright Hub looks at the awesome Archon

A Protoss Archon is created when two Templars, be they Dark or High, make the ultimate sacrifice and leave their mortal forms behind to combine into a howling scream of psionic energy, swirling in explosive fashion across the Starcraft 2 battlefield. In this article, we'll take a detailed look at this late-game Protoss unit and how best to apply its undoubted power to the SC2 multiplayer arena.

Starcraft 2 Archon Tips and Tricks

    Starcraft 2 Archon

    Strong Against:

    Vulnerable To:

    Protoss vs Protoss

While the Archon can be a powerful unit to unleash on Zerg and Terran opposition, the Protoss faction has a number of deterrents to it that make it only worth employing if your enemy's detection abilities are making life impossible for your Dark Templar units. Archons are vulnerable to the powerful ranged Protoss units such as Stalkers and Colossus, while even Phoenix fighters can use their Graviton Beam upgrade to interfere with an Archon's effectiveness.

    Protoss vs Terran

Archons come into their own against Terran opposition, where their high Shields strength and bonuses against biological units can make them devastating against Marines. Wait until your High Templars have exhausted their energy reserves, and then combine two into an Archon to finish the fight. Take care to avoid the powerful cannons of the Terran Thor.

    Protoss vs Zerg

Again, the Archon anti-biological bonus makes them an excellent, if expensive, addition to your forces when fighting Zerg. They can massacre lower order Zerg units at a ferocious pace. Infestors are effective against the Archon though, being both able to root them to the spot with Fungal Growth and then apply Mind Control to turn them against their own side.

    Conclusion

Some players have compared the Starcraft 2 Archon unfavorably with its predecessors in the first game in the series, but it remains a highly effective unit against large swathes of biological units, be they Terran or Zerg. Against its own race, though, its limitations and the plethora of counters the Protoss can employ to stop it in its tracks makes it an expensive luxury.
