I purchased Rampage: Total Destruction for Nintendo Wii the exact same day I actually bought my Nintendo Wii. The moment my eyeballs landed on the attractive box art, I thought it would be a game I would enjoy for hours.
I remember playing the classical version on my Nintendo thinking that it was the coolest game ever. Who wouldn't want to roam through cities, knocking down buildings with the same almighty strength that only Godzilla and King Kong could possess?
After reliving a memory from my childhood, I began to think of how neat it would be to slam through cities using the Nintendo's Nun-chucks. Rampage: Total Destruction was basically that concept, roam through cities and destroy all buildings, and maybe eat a human here or there.

After slipping the Rampage: Total Destruction disc into my Wii, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the original classic Rampage was included with the newly updated version of the game. As much as I was itching to try out the original game, the newly improved Total Destruction had me far too excited to keep it on hold.
There were four modes to choose from from the get go. Campaign Mode allows you to play alone, or with a partner. Pairing up is fun in this mode because you work together to smack down cities, unlock new playable characters, and upgrade your monster with special new abilities.
The next mode is King of the City, where you compete against other players to try and dominate the city. King of the World mode is similar, but this game mode stretches into other cities.
The last mode is a time mode which allows you to compete against other players to see who can destroy more, in the given amount of time.
After you pick your mode, you then choose your monster! I rummaged through eight different characters and picked one of my original favorites; George the Ape.
Seeing that competing against other players within my household causes actual fighting, we went with the mode that we could enjoy, without getting mad at one another. We went with Campaign Mode.

Game play in Rampage: Total Destruction has barely changed since the original title of Rampage. The concept is all the same. Walk up to a building, kick it, smack it, and grab at any power ups, or humans that are inside of the buildings.
The retro game player in me however liked the fact that they stuck to the same formula. Unfortunately though, the game play grows boring,considering the fact that this is all the game really has to offer. Running through and destroying cities is fun, but truly the only rewards you are getting from doing such deeds are upgrades for your monster, and new monsters added to your playable characters library.
As the game progressed, I also noted that it did not get very much harder. I needed more of a challenge.

I noticed a huge visual change in the game compared to the old version. Characters were more detailed, colors much brighter and more attractive, and the game was upgraded to 3D, with a 2D view.
The game still uses the same side-scrolling that the original Rampage does. With the 3D environment, however, your character can move in between buildings and streets that are located in the distance--sort of like jumping from one city street block, to another one behind that block.
All in all, I enjoyed the new updated look given to the game. Unfortunately, the 3D look created most of the issues that the game came packed with. While attempting to destroy cars, or planes in the air, I could not get a good look at what 3D plane they were located in. Planes would look like they were on the exact same 3D level as me, but when I went to swipe them down from the sky, I would miss. Seeing that these fighter planes are non-stop shooting at the monster, being leveled up with them when making an attack is crucial.

The sounds that were heard throughout Rampage: Total Destruction are slim and few. The same two or three tunes will play throughout the game in a chime and beat type pattern. It gets really, really annoying after about 30 minutes into game play. Sounds could have definitely used an upgrade. If they could not incorporate music, the variety in the annoying chimes and beats could have been a bit thicker.

Sorry folks, as soon as you rampage through the Campaign mode of Rampage: Total Destruction, it is unlikely that you will want to pick this game up for a second round. The game play is far too repetitive. Since destroying everything on my first round of playing the game, I have yet to play the game again.

Controls in Rampage: Total Destruction were actually pretty flawless. I could jump, punch, and kick without error.
You control your monster by using the Nun-chucks control stick, and you destroy things in your path using the Wii Mote. Everything works flawlessly, but everything is repetitive. You can knock down building faster by just button jamming the A button, and swinging the Wii Mote around aimlessly. Sometimes you will do a special move, and sometimes not. It's a control of chance, but when a special move does occur, its likely the best action the game will deliver.

Rampage: Total Destruction is definitely quirky in how the game's 3D platform works. It is repetitive, and it gets boring way too quickly.
Although it is not the worst game I have seen delivered to the Nintendo Wii, it is a game that I couldn't highly recommend for purchase, unless you were getting it for say, under $5.00.
Rampage: Total Destruction had the formula down correctly, but the game was just executed in the wrong way. I'd like to see another title surface from Rampage, but I don't think it will be happening anytime soon.
