Important Basic Information for Upgrading

First thing’s first. If you’re trying to upgrade everything in this game, you’re going to be spending a lot of money. If you’re spending a lot of money, then you’re going to need to grind a lot of money. Chances are very good the only way you’re going to do this is by farming turtles. There’s no quicker way to get money than platinum ingot drops, so that’s what you’re going to have to do. If you were hoping to find a faster place, sorry, you’re out of luck. We also have a full Final Fantasy XIII Walkthrough that goes chapter by chapter, so check that out as well.

Ge

neral Tips

Don’t sell anything that’s not expressly labeled as one of the money components. These include: Credit Chips, Incentive Chips, Platinum Ingots, and other such components. You’ll know the difference, because most non-money components will sell for less than 100 gil.

Don’t sell accessories unless you have more than one of them. Even then, they’re typically not worth enough to be sold for enough value.

Plan your upgrades. Don’t waste an Ultracompact Reactor on something that only needs 500 exp to cap out. Try to always have a 3x exp multiplier when you’re dropping the synthetic components for the fastest exp.

For the Treasure Hunter challenge: Each character has 8 weapons. Each of these eight weapons evolves into a different Tier 2 weapon. Each Tier 2 weapon evolves into the same Tier 3 weapon. You only need to evolve one ultimate weapon out of the 8 possible to complete the challenge.

For the Treasure Hunter challenge: You will need the following number of each catalyst. Check the next page for information on their locations and drop rates. This is for weapons only. Accessories depends on what ones you find along the way.

  • 15x Perovskite
  • 14x Uraninite
  • 12x Scarletite
  • 6x Trapezohedron
  • 3x Adamantite
  • 3x Cobaltite
  • 1x Dark Matter

Catalysts and the Most Efficient Upgrades

Upgrade Efficiency

The most efficient way to upgrade a weapon from start to finish is to abuse the exp multipliers. The multipliers have several thresholds; 1.25x, 1.5x, 1.75x, 2x, and 3x.

The absolute cheapest way to upgrade all the way to 3x exp is to use Sturdy Bones, Vibrant Oozes, or Barbed Tails. 36 of any of these items will take an item from 1x exp to 3x exp. They can be bought from Creature Comforts for 80 gil each. This means it will cost you 2,880 for each 3x multiplier you want.

page 1 2

To get the 3x multiplier you can do one of two things: Drop all 36 components at once, resulting in an instant 3x. Or you can use the efficient, but time consuming, way.

For the absolute most efficient exp out of multipliers, you can put the components on a few at a time. Starting from 0, put 4, bringing the multiplier to 1.25x. Then add another 4, which have a 1.25x multiplier and bring it to 1.5x. Then add 7, which brings it to a 1.75x. Then add 3 to bump it to 2x. Finally, drop 18, bringing it to 3x.

This method is slightly more time consuming, but it maximizes the (negligible) exp from the organic components.

Mechanical Components and Catalysts

Mechanical Components

The most effective mechanical components, the EXP they give, and their cost in the shops are listed below.

  • Ultracompact Reactor - 40,000 EXP - 50,000 gil

  • Supercharger - 774 EXP - 1,600 gil

  • Particle Accelerator - 4,800 EXP - 10,000 gil

  • Turboprop - 768 EXP - 1,600 gil

  • Superconductor - 400 EXP - 840 gil

  • Perfect Conductor - 751 EXP - 1,600 gil

    page 2 1

Obviously you don’t want to use an Ultracompact Reactor on something that only takes 2,000 exp to level. The extra EXP carries from level to level, but does NOT carry from * to the next evolved state.

Some of these items you will have to complete Mission 7 in Chapter 11 to be able to buy.

Catalysts

Catalysts are the most important part of item upgrading, because they are what allows you to turn a * item into the next tier item. Here’s a list of each catalyst and where it can be found.

Upgrading Lightning’s Weapons

Lightning uses gunblades that collapse into a small compact form to slot into a sheath carried on her hip. Like every character, she has eight basic weapons, each that upgrade into a Tier 2 weapon, that then upgrade into the same Tier 3 weapon.

Blazefire Saber is Tier 1 and can be bought from “Up In Arms” at a save point. It requires 24,600 EXP to reach * level. Use a Perovskite to evolve it into: Flamberge, which is a Tier 2 weapon. Give it 445,950 EXP and it reaches * level. From there you can use a Trapezohedron to evolve it into Lightning’s Ultimate, the: Omega Weapon. Her Tier 3 weapon, which takes 1,296,897 EXP to max out.

lightning 1

Next is the Axis Blade, which is a Tier 1 weapon that can be bought from “Plautus’ Workshop.” It requires 66,750 EXP to reach * level. Use an Adamantite to evolve it into: Enkindler, the Tier 2 blade of the tree. Giving this sword 280,830 EXP will max out it’s level. From there you can give it a Trapezohedron to evolve it into her: Omega Weapon. This version of her Tier 3 weapon takes 1,419,867 EXP to top out it’s level.

The third set is the Edged Carbine, another Tier 1 that can be bought at “Up In Arms.” This one takes 33,000 EXP to level to *, after which you can feed it a Perovskite to evolve it into: Razor Carbine. As a Tier 2 weapon this one takes 437,550 EXP to level to max. From there, as always, feed it a Trapezohedron to evolve it into the: Omega Weapon. This version takes 1,296,897 EXP to max out.

Fourth is the Lifesaber, which is quite the pun. This one can also be purchased at “Plautus’ Workshop” and maxes out with 70,850 EXP. Feed it a Scarletite to evolve it into: Peacemaker, which takes 236,350 EXP to reach * level. From there, just like all the other ultimates, feed it a Trapezohedron to evolve it into the: Omega Weapon. This variant takes 1,460,247 to max level.

Fifth is the Gladius, which most people try to upgrade first due to it’s strength. It maxes out with 54,800 EXP and can be bought from “Up In Arms” again. Feed it a Uraninite to evolve it into the Helter-skelter, which takes 332,560 EXP to max out at the * level. As always, feed it a Trapezohedron to transform it into the Omega Weapon. This one takes 1,380,087 EXP to finish.

Six of eight is the Organyx, which can be purchased later from “Gilgamesh, Inc.” This sword takes 20,100 EXP to *. Feed it a Cobaltite to transform it into the Apocalypse, for your Tier 2 version. This sword will then take 233,220 EXP to cap out. Once there, feed it a Trapezohedron to turn it into the Omega Weapon. This version takes 1,514,127 EXP to max level.

Seventh is the Hauteclaire, purchasable from “Gilgamesh, Inc.” It takes 54,800 EXP to top out. Feed it a Uraninite and it will evolve into the Durandal. This Tier 2 weapon will then take 332,570 EXP to cap off. Once there, feed it yet another Trapezohedron to evolve it into the Omega Weapon, again. This one takes 1,380,087 EXP to finish.

lightning 2

The Eighth and final of Lightning’s weapons is the Lionheart, which can eventually be purchased from “Plautus’ Workshop” again. This one takes 63,060 EXP to level up. Once it’s maxed, you can feed it a Scarletite to transform it into the Ultima Weapon. Not to be confused with the Omega Weapon, as FF fans are wont to do. This one takes 221,900 EXP to level. Once there, feed it, you guessed it, a Trapezohedron to turn it into the Omega Weapon. This one takes 1,482,487 EXP to level.

Upgrading Vanille’s Weapons

Vanille, your overly hypercheerful girl from Pulse, uses some sort of crazy wire staff weapon. As always, she has eight of them. They fold into a compact form as well, though she has no pouch to carry them in.

Hope, the whiny kid, somehow manages to have the most physics-defying weapon in the game. His boomerangs not only hit monsters and fly on, but he seems to be able to remotely control them to hit multiple times. Figure that one out. Yes, they use AMP technology, which is barely explained in the game to begin with and almost never used byond the first scenes and a few sanctum enemies, but a boomerang? Really?
