Overview of Magic Shrines in Classic Diablo

Shrines in Diablo are areas where magic has concentrated into a single spot and via shrines this magic can grant you great favour. However, just as easily, shrines can also grant ill-fortune.

Shrines are activated by having your character walk close to one and clicking on the shrine once highlighted by your cursor. The effects granted by shrines depends on its type, and while it’s magic takes effect immediately, it’s effects may not be noticeable right away. Sometimes a shrine’s effect will be beneficial, other times not. So how you do know which ones to avoid?

Shrines in Diablo are titled with an adjective, but unless you have a good memory you’re likely to forget the effects of each shrine. When each shrine is activated it also gives off a cryptic message which is a clue to the shrine’s effect but for these shrines their effect is the same throughout the game.

Special shrines also exist, such as the Blood Fountain and the Goat Shrine. Special shrines have temporary effects, such as healing or mana replenishment, but some also have random effects so a hint of caution is always advised when faced with special shrines.

Types Of Shrine

When you hover over a shrine, its name will be given as an adjective, such as ‘creepy’ or ‘spritual’ and when activated will give a clue to its effect. The full list of shrines is below:

Fountain of Tears

The Fountain of Tears gives the character +1 to one randomly selected attribute, while -1 to another attribute, also randomly selected but not the same as the increased attribute.

While Cauldron and Goat Shrines’ effects are randomly allocated from the among the main shrines in Diablo, Thaumaturgic shrines never appear in them.
