Champions Online features one of the most robust character creators in the world of MMOs. Few games allow you to so fully customize the appearance of your character, and it’s truly possible to approximate that super hero you’ve been designing in your head since childhood.
All this customizability comes at a cost, though. While it’s amazing to have near-limitless options for character creation, sometimes all the choices can be a bit daunting.
That’s where this guide comes in. We’ll walk you through the process of creating your Champions Online character from start to finish, hopefully allowing you to concentrate more fully on creating the hero of your dreams.

The first thing you need to do when creating your hero is to log in to your Champions Online account. Once you’re logged in, click on an empty character slot and then the giant “Create" button.
Your first choice is perhaps the most important: which archetype will your character be? Silver accounts have access to eight archetypes, while gold players have access to additional powersets and the “Free Form" character option.
The descriptions of each powerset will give you some idea what role your character will fill. Additionally, you can click the “Show Full Power Progression" button in the lower right to take a look at the powers that archetype gains as it levels up.
The Champions Online forums are a good place to seek advice if you’re not sure which archetype suits you. Another good method is to simply choose one that sounds good and jump in. You can always create a different character later on once you’ve gained a bit of in-game experience.

On the face customization screen, there are several preset options to choose from. Additionally, you can click the “Customize Face" button to manually manipulate many aspects of your character’s visage, including height, width, eye placement, etc... Once that’s done, click “Next" to continue.
Body customization is next. You can again choose from a number of pre-set body types or click the “Customize" button to manually adjust things like arm length, height, and muscle definition. Once you’re satisfied, click “Next" once again to move on.
Once you’re satisfied with your hero’s body, it’s time to move on to creating a costume.

Costume Creation Tips
A few things to be aware of before you begin customization:
First, if you don’t want to waste time looking at and sorting through costume options that aren’t unlocked for your particular account type, be sure to hit the checkbox on the first screen that says “Hide and remove unowned costume parts." This will do exactly what it says and keep you from choosing the perfect item only to find out you can’t use it.
Second, if you have a basic color scheme in mind for your hero, set it now and hit the “link" button to make all subsequent costume choices adhere to that scheme. You can always change individual parts later, and choosing now will help you ensure your character’s costume looks as uniform as possible.
Third, it really helps to have some idea what kind of costume you’d like to create before you begin. It doesn’t have to be in-depth, but knowing whether you want a nine-foot, hulking insect man or a diminutive ninja girl with a tiger tail can go a long way toward focusing your efforts and helping you narrow down the literally thousands of choices.

There are four basic areas of costume creation: head, chest, hands, and legs. Within each of these areas are several different sub-types of costume. For example, clicking on the head icon at the top left, then on the “Heads and Hairs" bar just below it will bring up a bevy of subcategories including full mask, full helmets, bestial, insect, and more.
Each area of costume creation has one of these sub-menus, so be sure to check them all to find the costume type you’re interested in.
Be prepared to spend some time working through all the various options in each area of your costume. I recommend working from the top down, unless you have a specific piece of costume in mind and want to work outward from that.
For the impatient or anyone who finds themselves simply at a loss for ideas, there’s always the “Randomize Costume" button. You may not end up with exactly what you’d like this way, but you can get something interesting and tweak it to your liking pretty easily.
Once you’ve tweaked your costume to your liking, hit the “Next" button to move on.

Name Your Hero
The next step is one of the most important: naming your hero. While you can pretty easily customize a character’s appearance later on in the game, changing the name will cost you some real-world money, so choose wisely.
If your hero adheres to a certain theme, try to choose a name that goes along with it. A cowboy-themed hero name “Zarnax" just doesn’t seem right, you know?
You can also take a moment here to come up with a suitable backstory for your character.
Once you’re finished on this final screen, hit the giant “I’m Done" button to proceed to the tutorial and take control of your created character.
Congrats, you’re ready to hit the streets of Millennium City and defend the weak against persecution.
Good luck, hero.
