Champions Online: Free For All is Cryptic’s entry into the realm of free to play. They have worked hard to give people as much as they can for free while giving some nice benefits to those people who decide to subscribe. Silver Players

Silver Players are the free players. Below are some of the main items associated with the free account type.

• You get to experience all the content minus the adventure packs for free.
• You get to customize your characters extensively but can not tint your power colors nor can you create a custom archetype.
• You also only get one inventory slot, one costume slot and two character slots.
• You also have a resource (money) limit of 250g and limited market house slots.
• Support is limited to self help.
• Things like chat and mail are limited but the limitation gets removed as you meet certain requirements like time played or level.

Gold Members

Gold Members are the subscribers. Below you will find the highlights for this account type.

• You get access to the complete game including the adventure packs.
• You will receive a stipend of Cryptic points each month that you can use in the in-game store.
• You get full support, veteran rewards and priority logins

If you want the most out of the game and can afford it, this is the way to go.

Getting Started

Champions Online is known to have the best character creator of any game. Even as a free player, the amount of customization you can do is amazing. With all the options, I doubt there will ever be two characters exactly alike. So take your time and look at all the options. Once you are at the end, you can save your character’s look to use another time. Once you are done, get ready to save the world. I would suggest that all new players run through the tutorial. It will get you up to speed on the game and introduce you to some big names in the game.

Quests and Overall Gameplay

The quests are laid out nicely and they made changes to some so you do not have to run back and forth all the time. The rewards are your standard fare of equipment and money. The quests tend to nudge you to other areas and keeps you from trying to figure out where you need to go next. There are also random quests that the citizens will inform you about.

The gameplay is fast. There are not many quests that will have you not fight anything. Many parts of the game can be done solo but there are areas where having a team will make things a lot easier.

The graphics give you a feel that you are in a comic book and the sound effects add to the immersion that you will feel.

Crafting

Crafting is a little different than your standard MMO. You choose a specialization (Arms, Science or Mysticism) and then a subset that is more cosmetic than anything. The main source of crafting resources comes from you breaking down items, they are one of the specializations listed above, or accessing a “node” for your specialization type. You learn recipes from your trainer and also buy your crafting level upgrades from them.

Final Thoughts

Champions Online: Free For All has a lot of potential. Its more of a casual game than one that you should play for hours and hours at a time. A turn off may be the low amount of content but I am sure that new areas will be added.Also, an older computer or slower internet connection may have trouble playing the game, The gameplay is fast and the PvP is fun. While many people see Champions Online going f2p as a last ditch effort, I see it as them making the game accessible to more people and filling a gap in the genre of MMOs.
