What are the Top 10 PC Games? The Results May Surprise You

Leading UK PC and video games retailer, GAME, recently asked customers to vote on their all-time favourite game in an attempt to discover the greatest games of all time. The response generated almost 100,000 votes with games from both the PC format and console, from past and present being put forward by fans.

So, what games are the greatest PC games among the UK gaming population? While it should be noted that some of the results cover multiformat games - games that have been released on multiple consoles - the results may not be wholly indicative of the true representation, and some of the results are surprising, with some ‘classics’ reaching the upper echelons of the list despite their age.

Although less than one year old, occupying top spot was Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. This first-person shooter, set in a modern conflict is available across a range of formats, including PC and sees the player take on the role of modern-day British and American soldiers to stop a megalomaniacal Russian nationalist hell-bent on restoring the Soviet Union.

Second place in the top 10 PC games chart goes to Half Life 2. The further adventures of scientist, Dr Gordon Freeman are also available on multiformat and see the maverick scientist battle his way through alien hordes on Earth. Overall in the list, Half Life 2 occupies position nine in the greatest games of all time list, while the prequel - the original Half Life game also makes the top 10 PC chart, coming it at position six and position eighteen overall.

Another relatively new game and one which is also available across multiple platforms occupies third spot in the top ten PC games chart: Gears Of War, a third-person tactical shooter which treads the familiar alien invasion scenario. Overall, Gears Of War is the tenth greatest game of all time.

The first role-playing game makes an appearance at position four in the greatest PC game chart. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, yet another multiformat game, is a monster freeform RPG where players can be good or evil and the game has earned countless accolades and awards from PC games publications around the world, winning several coveted ‘Game Of The Year’ and ‘RPG Of The Year’ awards. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is ranked the eleventh greatest game of all time.

One place behind in fifth, and also occupying twelfth place overall, World Of Warcraft, the most popular MMORPG of all time was a certainty to be among the list of great games and with the original Half Life in sixth place in the list, seventh place sees the fourth installment of Resident Evil take the stage, occupying position twenty-three overall.

In eighth position, the ever-lovable Sims 2 makes the top thirty computer games of all time, reaching position twenty-four overall, while the classic soccer game Sensible Soccer - one of the first PC games ever released - occupies ninth slot and twenty-seven overall; testament indeed to its staying power and quite rightly referred to as a classic.

Completing the top 10 PC games of all time is the original first-person shooter, Doom, which occupies position 30 overall, and is a game which accounted for a large proportion of the authors time in days gone by!

So the Top 10 PC games chart reads:

Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (#1 overall)

_

Half Life 2 (# 9 overall)

Gears Of War (#10 overall)

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (#11 overall)

World Of Warcraft (#12 overall)

Half-Life (#18 overall)

Resident Evil 4 (#23 overall)

The Sims 2 (#24 overall)

Sensible Soccer (#27 overall)

Doom (#30 overall)

Interestingly, retro games featured well in the chart overall, with BBC Micro’s classic game ‘Elite’ making the chart at position 22 overall! Other retro games included in the top 100 include the aforementioned Sensible Soccer, Monkey Island and Grim Fandango.

As stated, some of these results are likely down to their cross-format availability and overall position in the chart has probably been determined across all votes on all formats. If we were to remove the cross-format element entirely and focus purely on games available on the PC, the chart would read:

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (#11 overall)

World Of Warcraft (#12 overall)

Half-Life (#18 overall)

Resident Evil 4 (#23 overall)

The Sims 2 (#24 overall)

Sensible Soccer (#27 overall)

Doom (#30 overall)

Command And Conquer: Red Alert 2 (#31 overall)

The Sims (#52 overall)

Counter Strike: Source (#53 overall)

The results are quite surprising and beg the question: Do you agree with the British public? Is this the definitive list of the Top 10 PC games of all time? What your yours be?
