Okami for the Wii is probably one of the best games on the system so far. Like Twilight Princess, it is an action adventure game with RPG elements. However, there are a lot of things you can do in the game that no one tells you about. If you want to get the most out of your Okami experience try some of these.

What’s with the lonely statues?

You’ve probably noticed as you walk around Shinshu Field a number of statues. If you examine them Issun says they look as if no one has cared for them in a long time. You also have probably noticed the pottery maker in Shinshu Field. Each time he finishes a pot, he gives it to Ammy, but what are you supposed to do with them? Give them to the statues and you’ll receive praise! Do this for all the statues around Shinshu Field.

Sunken Chests and Clam Shells

What are you supposed to do with those sunken chests? They are everywhere, from Kamiki village to the Sei-An city’s canals. No, you never get the ability to walk underwater, you have to bring them to the surface with the most basic of all brush strokes, the Power Slash. That’s right, Power Slash those babies and you’ll be swimming in treasure in no time!

The same goes for all the clam shells around the Ryoshima Coast. Submerged or not, the only way to open them is with a Power Slash.

Climbing Catcall Tower

When you get to the Northern Ryoshima Coast, you’ll no doubt notice the giant tower with the sound of a yowling cat coming from it. Once you can get close enough to investigate (when you ride on Porpoise) be sure to bring plenty of fish, at least 15-20 pieces so you don’t run out! You can feed a lot of cats around the base of the tower and as you climb it every few levels has a cat waiting to be fed. You don’t want to be caught without fish once you reach the top either!

Torii Gates

You know those big red gates that mark sacred places in Okami? Well, those are called Torii Gates. In Japan, they mark the entrance into a Shinto Shrine and are thought of as gates into the spirit world. Only by walking through the Torii Gates in Okami can Ammy access Sasa Sanctuary or even go back into Sakuya’s great tree in Kamiki Village. If you walk around the Torii Gates, you will still be in the normal world.

Easy Demon Fangs

Demon fangs are not that easy to get, normally. In order to obtain them you must attack an enemy when it is in its death throws which can be hit or miss. However, there is a technique you can buy from Onigiri Sensei for 100,000 yen (you’ll need to upgrade your money pouch first!) called Golden Fury. Each time you use this um, attack, an enemy will drop a Demon Fang just for you!

So, what is Golden Fury? Well, Ammy lifts up her leg and pees on the enemy. Maybe that’s why they throw a Demon Fang at Ammy, to stop her from peeing!

Walking on Water

Those Demon Fangs sure come in handy. With them you can buy all kinds of neat stuff, but one of the best is the ability to walk on water. For just 100 Demon Fangs Ammy can run across water like she runs across land. You can buy it from the Emperor in Sei-An city after you have defeated Oni Island. It is called the Water Tablet, and it’s very useful for running around the Southern Ryoshima Coast to all those outlying rocks, which are filled with clam shells of treasure!

Finicky Controls?

okami2

Okami was originally a PS2 game, and it was ported to the Wii to take advantage of the Wii’s motion controls. However, sometimes they can be a bit finicky. If the Wii mote isn’t doing what you’d like it to do, you may have to make some changes.

Play Okami in the dark. I’m serious. If you have a window with sunlight shining in the path of your Wii and sensor bar, you will not be able to draw properly. And using the brush strokes is so fundamental to the game you must be able to use them properly. However, the sun doesn’t effect the motion controls, only the sensor bar. Keep that in mind while playing and you’ll have the best Okami experience ever!
